As of July 1, 2010, the MS Interpreter Registration Law now has been amended to clarify what it accepts to allow interpreters to register to work in the state.

It specifies RID, NAD, EIPA, a state q.a. (not the MS-QA anymore), and then such further configurations of national testing as may appear.

So, progress is being made in offering alternative (although the Goldman QA is still considered viable by the Legislature). But at least interpreters now have choice.

I don't believe the levels of the QA have credence. The testing was flawed. The only criteria I accept is national certification. In the state of Mississippi, there are 18 out of 120 registered interpreters.

The interpreters that have been touted as "qualified" for all these years are not accepted by the Deaf community as qualified because they cannot voice them! I don't care how much they sign, if the Deaf person never gets to be hear properly, then interpreting did not happen.

But Deaf people are afraid to criticize any of the interpreters openly because they have been told by agencies from the Coast to the North that if they don't like the service, they won't be given any anymore. I have known of Deaf people left WITHOUT service in emergency rooms just because they complained about the interpreters they were sent. THAT is audism.

I know I'm years behind responding to this, but that's because I just found it. A lot of what you say is true about the QA. It is "owned" by one individual. It is biased. It has not been psychometically rated for neutrality and standardization. It is a faulty instrument of testing.

One thing I must correct in your assumptions of specialized testing: Educational interpreting isn't about mostly signing and sometimes voicing. Educational interpreting requires the same skills: fluency in both languages. When you are fluent, you can "voice" at will or "sign" at will. Students participate much more when they feel that fluency. Likewise, the interpreter becomes the language model to the Deaf child, the language expert to the IEP team, the cultural liaison for the hearing clients. Fluency is CRITICAL in educational interpreting. The EIPA (Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment) is a 5-level certification used nationally and endorsed by RID. It likewise demands fluency. You can't interpret with just one language LOL.

I just found this today, so sorry for the "belated" comment. I am part of that "fast-money" generation that came of age in the 80's. I am conservative, but I still recycle and believe in being a good steward of the earth.

I have my personal beliefs that are very dear to me, I am a devout Roman Catholic, and am very proud of that! But one of the greatest things I find in my faith is the ability to love and appreciate people who are very different from me. Regardless of whether or not I accept their beliefs, and regardless of whether or not I think there is a better way for them, I am content in the knowledge there is good in everyone. If, for some reason, I can't seem to find it I just avoid them!

I find that the denigration of others speaks volumes about THEM, and really has very little to do with me most of the time! I don't need to save the world, but if someone needs help and looks my way, I am happy to give encouragement and whatever I can. Growing up in a working class home, I know what it means to need something but not get it! And I also know that possessions do not make the best measurements of who or what a person is! I have a hippy friend who is about my age, and she is definitely not mainstream, but then again, although I am a fairly conservative person, neither am I! I guess the truth is this: anyone really striving to live an authentic life is outside the mainstream!

That's a shame about your kids' attitudes. I must admit that two of my three went through a similar phase... just refer back to the "inner bitch" comment and you'll understand why they grew out of it! *evil grin*

Only a few years ago, my youngest had the "money is everything" train of thought. Love and life as well as having some miserable wealthy friends have all taught him the error in his thinking. I hate that his friends are suffering, but thankful that they showed my son a valuable lesson.

Having said all of that, there are moments when they DO get frustrated with my attitudes. But most of the time, they introduce me to their friends as "my mom, the hippy". *grin*

What a great post! I've also put a bit of thought into why there is this backlash toward "hippie" by young people. And yes, I see the words "tree hugging, patchouli stinking hippie" all the time.

The 20 something's, of which I have two of them, just grew up in an era when making money was fairly easy, and highly valued. I think they may be more befuddled with this economy more than most!

I can't get my kids to recycle, and I hound them constantly. And ironically, it will have more impact on them than it will on me in the future!

I have enjoyed reading your blog that I found this evening. And yes, I remember the Colorforms you mentioned in an earlier post, as a kid. That was high tech then! I did, however, get to relive my Creepy Crawlers days with my kids. Woo-hoo!

Roxanne, glad you like the stories. I must tell you, though, that although I did write the second story, I stole the idea for it from another writer. I heard a story on This American Life on NPR (great program, btw) about two hamsters whose owner hasn't come home in awhile. Anyway, the book was called Beware of God by Shalom Auslander. He's a Jewish-born atheist, and his stories are brilliant. I'd like to take full credit for my fish story, but it just wouldn't be honest not to mention the other story.

And, in his story, the owner does eventually come home. Sadly, in mine he doesn't.

Skonk's story, however, is 100-percent original, as was Skonk.

Hi sweetie! LOL I have just found this because I have visited the SPP addicts forum!

I like this app because initially I was curious to see what a friend of mine was up to... and it appealed to my nurturing side (as you have to take care of it) and my creative side also. I enjoy collages, doll's houses (I used to make food, furniture and dolls for a doll's house), fuzzy felt from when I was a child... and now with my own daughter... Just picture making and story telling in general. In another more psychological aspect it allows the creator to project his/her own fantasies in some way also by making representatives of events or people in their own lives which they may have trouble dealing with and need an outlet.

All I can say is, "yep." It's true, it's all true...

I read through this and smiled the whole way down. :~D I loved it. I actually do have SPP on my iphone. It isn't quite the same. They don't update the app and you can't add friends, but when I am not near an internet source it is a fun distraction.

Education is indeed the key. The stigma of epilepsy is an absurdity, and needs to be banished. Both the medical community and the public need a far better understanding of this disorder. Good post.
